The Meaning of Pilates

Pilates is a way of conditioning the body and building strength, flexibility, and coordination with endurance without putting any extra bulk on your body.

Pilates will also help your circulation and get your blood flowing to every cell of the body.

You will also find that it can sculpt the body and give you strength to your powerhouse otherwise known as the core.

Anyone that does their Pilates on a regular basis will be less likely to have injuries and have better posture as well as better health.

Joseph H. Pilates founded Pilates and was born in Germany.

He was fragile when he was a child and always had illnesses.

So that he could be stronger and have better health, he played different sports and become a great athlete. He also served as a nurse in WWI when he was in Great Britain.

There, he designed exercises and equipment that would help soldiers that were injured.

Pilates was also made into a series of exercises that would be used with a mat that focuses on the torso. These exercise techniques were based on different method from all over the world. They would also include Chinese martial arts and even yoga.

Joseph Pilates thought that mental and physical health was connected. This exercise program that he invented was made with principles to help support his thoughts.

They would include concentration, control and movements that flowed into the body with the right breathing.

There are two types of Pilates.

You can focus on the mat exercises or you can use the machines to help you put strength and more body tone into the way that you look and feel.

By the age of 14, he was fit enough to post for anatomical charts mostly due to his practicing of gymnastics and bodybuilding.

Joseph believed the root of poor health came from poor breathing practices and bad posture. His practice of Pilates is undoubtedly the most popular form of exercise today.

Pilates is a non-aerobic form of exercises that draws strength from concentration and focus.

Pilates exercises improve flexibility and increase muscle strength, particularly the abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks. These are considered the body’s core muscles.

Another benefit of the Pilates exercises are balanced muscular strength on both sides of the body and enhanced muscular control of the back and limbs.

Another great advantage is improved stabilization of the spine, greater awareness of posture and improved physical coordination and balance.

Pilates helps relax and strengthen the back, shoulders and neck also. Many doctors have come to learn that Pilates is also a safe rehabilitation for joint and spinal injuries and the exercises when done properly will help aid in prevention of musculoskeletal injuries.

For some, exercise is a passion. For others, it seems to be a four-lettered word, or in this case an eight-letter word. But, it doesn’t have to be a dreaded event.

Exercise can be fun.

It can mean more than running for hours on the treadmill or climbing the stair master until your legs feel like Jell-O. You can get in shape by doing things that you love to do.

Take sports for example—when you’re playing a heated game of basketball with your buddies, it doesn’t feel like exercise, but more like just a good time between friends. A good tennis match on a Saturday afternoon can help to relieve stress just as much as a good run around the track would.

Take advantage of your geographic location. If you’re lucky enough to live in a mountainess region, hiking and rock climbing can be a great form of exercise that doesn’t have to feel it. Getting out into nature and climbing a mountain filled with beautiful trees, rocks and birds can do wonders for the body and the soul. There’s just something about being outdoors that makes your body feel alive.

Maybe you live away from the mountains, but close to the beach. There are endless opportunities to work out there. From strolling through the sandy beaches to fun-filled beach volleyball games, you can be shaping up without being stuck inside a gym.

And, if you’re the water-type try your hand at surfing, wake boarding, water skiing or any other water sport that gets you out of your beach chair and into the activities that can help your health and your figure.

Some other fun ideas to get active without the dread that you feel when you hear the word exercise are bike riding, swimming or dancing. Get a group of friends together, hop on your bikes and head out on a groomed city trail. You’ll be riding, chatting, laughing and…exercising.

Or, take the kids to the local swimming pool. Not only will they love it, you’ll be burning calories right and left as you chase the kids around, attend underwater tea parties and teach them how to dive. Swimming is a great way to get a good work out, without feeling the pain of a good work out.

Dancing is another fabulous way to sneak in some exercise. Whether you take a ballroom dancing class, enjoy tapping or just hit the clubs with your friends to dance the night away—you’ll be sure to reap the benefits of shaping up.

Getting in shape can be fun, so don’t let your negative connotation of exercise inhibit your body from the benefits of daily activity.

Drawbacks To Pilates

Instruction in the Pilates method can be quite costly.

These costs are justified by instructors due to their expensive education, the cost of equipment and also the cost of studio rentals.

Sometimes a person new to Pilates will be given individual supervision until the instructor believes that the trainee has developed enough knowledge to continue his or her training in a group or a class.

This usually results in a flat stomach but sometimes a wider waist. This is because a lot of the Pilates exercises are practiced through flexion while the torso moves in a linear, forward fashion.

Exercising during pregnancy has been found to be important for preventing musculoskeletal problems and for maintaining muscle strength.

When Pilates is used in pregnancy, it has been found to have many benefits both physically and mentally.

However, many exercises during pregnancy are contra-indicated. The use of Pilates when a woman is pregnant should first meet with the approval of her doctor.

Then it should only be used if one is being guided by a qualified expert.

Legal action

In recent years, the term -Pilates- came under fire and resulted in a lawsuit. However the U.S. federal court ruled that this term was generic and was free for unrestricted use.

This has caused confusion among consumers because many people do not know what Pilates really is and what credentials they should look for in an instructor.

The creator of Pilates, Joseph Pilates has now been dead for over 40 years and the demand for his exercise program has never been greater.

Pilates creates body awareness. The focus is on precise movements coupled with steady breathing. All of this required attention changes ones awareness. You learn to train your mind and build symmetry and coordination in the body.

Pilates teaches a person how to strengthen the core of their body and this core strength helps radiate strength throughout the entire body and its extremities.

A stronger core does not necessarily mean flat abs. But the core strength will give your muscles the work they need to further your exercises and create those flatter abs.

You will definitely begin to trim the body down and that will in turn cause a flatter mid section. Pilates will shift your shape, but it ma not change your body without added exercises. A flexible muscle is a stronger muscle.

Another benefit of Pilates is body control. Pilates teaches you how to move and achieve the all important body symmetry. Pilates works the entire body into synergy and that is how we should be moving on a daily basis.

In case you are not quite convinced here are some benefits that you will reap by doing Pilates workouts.

- A wholesome mind-body workout

- When you do Pilates, your mind becomes tuned in with your body. Are become acutely aware of where your body is in space, how it feels and how you will control its movement.

With Pilates you are looking for quality movements, not quantity. Proper breathing is essential and when done properly it can be a great stress reducer.

- Gain long, lean muscles as well as flexibility

- When doing a conventional workout, you tend to build bulky, short muscles. With Pilates muscle elasticity as well as joint mobility is improved. There is less of a chance for an injury to occur.

- Develop a strong core

- The -core- or -powerhouse- consists of deep abdominal muscles along with some of the other muscles that are closest to the spine.

- Develop an evenly conditioned body

- With regular workouts, weak muscles will only tend to weaken and the strong muscles will get stronger. This results in muscular imbalance which is a primary cause of chronic back pain and of injury.

With Pilates, your bodys’ entire musculature is evenly conditioned and balanced.

- Learn efficient patterns of motion

- The Pilates exercises concentrate on training several muscle groups at once while making smooth, continuous movements. If you develop the proper technique, you can retrain your body to more in safer and more efficient patterns of motion.

These are just several of the benefits that you will receive by doing Pilates exercises using proper techniques.

It is not just a collection of exercises, but it is a method that was developed and refined during its more than eighty years of observation and use.

One interpretation of the Pilates Principles is that it is similar to yoga.

Mind over matter
- The central focus of Pilates is to create a blending of mind and body.
The body will move with grace, economy and balance without even thinking about it. The goal is to produce the union of mind and body that is totally attention-free.

Breathing
- Through proper breathing the blood is able to work properly, that is, it circulates to every cell in the body and carries away waste related to fatigue.

You can be assured that a full and thorough inhalation as well as exhalation are part of each Pilates exercise. Breathing should also be done with control, concentration and precision.

Centering
- The very large muscle group that is found in the center of one’s body is called the -powerhouse-.

All of the energy for the Pilates exercises begins from this powerhouse and flows toward the extremities.

Concentration
- Pilates demands intense concentration or focus. The beginner learns to pay special attention to his or her body, building on small and delicate fundamental movements as well as controlled breathing.

Control
- The Pilates method is built on the premise of muscle control. That means that each Pilates exercise must be performed with utmost control.

This will help avoid injury and produce beneficial results.

Precision
- Each movement in a Pilates exercise has a purpose. No detail should be left out. The focus is to do one precise and perfect movement and not many halfhearted ones.

Yoga Pilates can prove to be of great help if all the necessary rules related to Pilates exercises is followed properly.

Yoga Pilates is a regimen of exercise that can be equally beneficial and enjoyable.

Each pose of yoga has great significance similar to its Pilates equivalent. The important yoga Pilates basics that one must master are movement to and fro from center and revolving around center. Maintaining good health and proper well being is the chief point of proper and regular practice of yoga Pilates.Regular action will definitely leave a deep, positive impact in your physical as well as mental life.

After some days of practice you will find that your body’s flexibility is enhanced. The stretching that is involved in Pilates yoga helps in lessening the threat of injuries.

One of the biggest benefits of Pilates exercises is that your body’s balance is improved. With the passage of time, your body aches will reduce to a great extent as well. With regular exercise, the muscles are strengthened, resulting in the stimulation of your endurance, stamina and your energy level.

One great thing that you will experience as a result of Pilates yoga is that you will find that your body and mind is much more relaxed compared to how you felt before. Pilates yoga involves certain breathing patterns that help a person to calm down and relax, resulting in sounder sleep.

Now days Pilates are often prescribed by specialists like osteopaths, physical therapists, chiropractors and many holistic practitioners as a principal, practical taming process.
Pilates indeed rank first in the western chart of fitness. The viewpoints of Pilates teachers and Yoga instructors are somewhat the same on the workings of the exercise. Many consider Pilates to be yoga on the machines while others see it as neuromuscular education or strength conditioning.

Basically Yoga and Pilates are reciprocally supportive:

Yoga gives Pilates litheness and mobility while Pilates offers constancy and mobility in the movement.
When united with Yoga, Pilates doctrine augments the practice by bringing central stabilization into light as well as training and substance for yoga postures (particularly in the strength to seize). Since Pilates is more about length and potency, Yoga helps to amplify the litheness capability.

Many people whose job demands sitting at a desk or driving almost 8 hours a day, gain a lot from Pilates Yoga. With easy ideas of figure and postural doctrines, it will support the backbone and unlock the oomph channels. It edifies consciousness and centering, suppleness and mobility. It is a coordination of associated exercises that are also helpful separately.

Dancers and professional athletes practice the Pilate form of exercise. This helps them to achieve flexibility of body and gain strength. Recently this form of exercise has become very popular among celebrities and models for keeping fit. There is no harm in practicing yoga Pilates. In fact, it is considered to be safe even when practiced during special conditions like pregnancy.

Often, people who eat right are more capable in performing their tasks at the office and are more able to get advancements in their careers. These guys do not take leaves of absence and when they do, they use it to have fun and unwind and not to recover from a bad illness.

People who eat healthy and work out will also have great bodies and are more physically attractive.

They are more likely to have better sex life and more romantic involvements, which in turn can make them more satisfied with life. These things are chained situations. Start in a positive light and you will end with a positive light too.

But despite the numerous benefits that you get from living a healthy lifestyle, why do people still stick to their old habits. One of the reasons is of course the unwillingness. After all, who would want to quit something that you enjoy doing or eating? Most people will not be willing to part ways with what they have been so used to doing. Just imagine saying goodbye to a comfort food or a hobby that makes you happy, will you do it?

Another reason is perhaps the difficulty. Most people attempt to change their ways for various reasons, health problems, relationship woes, even financial but most of the time they don’t see their plans through. They will try for a week and perhaps continue for a couple of weeks and then go back to their old habits after some time. They do not continue with their plans. One of the main reasons why is the lack of desire. To be successful in combating a bad habit, you need to really want it bad enough. You need to make sure that every temptation will not serve as temptation. Sometimes, will power is not enough for this. You also need the support of the people around you. This is why a lot of the programs right now that are created to help people change have a network of support system that will help their members.

So if you want to live a life of health and fitness, make the change now. There are a lot of benefits to it. You just need to fully commit to it and create your own support system.

It is noted that due to the low impact of the Pilates system, it can be used for rehabilitation.

There are going to be limitations of course and you will probably not see anyone with a broken bone in front of their TV doing Pilates.

It is very important for anyone who wants to do a program like Pilates while rehabilitating from an injury will need to have the approval of their physician.

It is very crucial that a person go to a professional instructor to prevent damage from further injuries happening.

Joseph Pilates started the system of exercises as a form of rehabilitation and conditioning to help improve health overall.

When he was a child he was always sick with rickets, asthma and rheumatic fever. During WWI Joseph Pilates continued to develop and use their work to help the rehabilitation of wounded war veterans.

Many of the medical professionals today found the benefits and therapeutic potential of their systems and many of the hospitals and clinics now offer Pilates as a form of their rehabilitation training methods.

The exercises are very helpful to patients who are hurt or challenged physically. Pilates helps to balance and strength the pelvis, hips and lower back to support the deeper muscles.

The exercises of Pilates will help to prevent injuries and lower the problems from preexisting conditions.

Pilates has also proven to be effective in the treatment of sharp and chronic back pain, osteoporosis, sports injuries and auto and work related injuries. Some will also find relief from head injuries and scoliosis.

Pilates has also made a huge contribution to rehab by helping doctors to effectively identify and develop the movement of a patient. Any patient that is confined to a wheelchair may find that they can develop a good amount of core strength and give them good overall health.

Mari Winsor was a 54-year-old woman with a great physique. She is the founder of Winsor Pilates and her body is like a twenty year old with great tone and flexibility.

Mari Winsor brought her form of Pilates for the use of the public. It is a modified low impact version of the original form of Pilates.

The Winsor Pilates technique was made so that anyone could do it.

It is very easy and great for any body type to perform. This will give people a great health improvement with no hard requirements or techniques.

It is told that because it is low impact, Winsor Pilates can be used to rehabilitate. There are going to be limits for some and you should talk to your doctor first before performing. You do not want to do it if you have broken bones of course.

It is crucial that anyone who wants to do a good program like Winsor Pilates when they are rehabilitating from any injury speaks to their doctor and gets the go ahead first.

People should also get professional advice from an instructor before they do any more damage to their body.

Women that are pregnant must be careful when doing Pilates. There are reformed and special programs or pregnant women who want to do Pilates.

In their third trimester, it is very important that Pilates not be done while lying down. They can cause damage to their blood flow of the baby and this can be a very serious problem.

However with everything said, except for pregnant women and anyone with extreme illnesses, Winsor Pilates is a great benefit for anyone that wants to get fit. The exercises are simple and will not hurt the joints, muscles and bones.

Pilates was designed by Joseph Pilates during World War I to improve the rehabilitation program for the returning veterans. Joseph Pilates had the belief that
both mental health and physical health are essential to one another.

He recommended some precise body movements that control and form to aid injured soldiers. These movements were used to regain their health by
strengthening, stretching and stabilizing the key muscles in the body.

He created the Pilates Principles to condition the whole body aiding in proper alignment, centering, concentration, control, precision, breathing and flowing movement.

The Pilates method is a physical fitness system, which Joseph Pilates developed in the early 20th century. As of 2005, there are eleven million people who practice
pilates regularly.

There are also 14,000 instructors in the United States alone. Pilates believed his method uses the mind to control the muscles. Focuses for this program are on
the core postural muscles, which help keep the body balanced.

These are essential to providing support for the spine and in turn supports the entire body. Pilates teaches awareness of breathing and the alignment of the spine and aim to strengthen the deep torso muscles.

Joseph Pilates was a legendary physical fitness trainer born in Germany in 1880. As a child he was small and frail. This fueled his fascination for physical fitness that would make him stronger and more physically attractive.

He later became an accomplished skier, boxer and gymnast. In 1926, he and his wife opened their first studio in New York City. Many of their first clients were from the dancing world.

Joseph Pilates was the creator of all the Pilates exercises. He started his technique as a philosophical and theoretical foundation. The exercises are not just a collection of exercises but as a method that was developed and figured out over move than eighty years of use and close observation.

The main principles of centering, concentration and control are about Pilates.

You will also have better breathing, precision, and flow. It is very similar to yoga. There are some basic principles of Pilates.

One type of principle is mind over matter. The central part of Pilates is to make a fusion of mind over body. You should not have to think about it because the body will move with grace and balance.

The end impact is a great union of your mind and body. Many practicing people will believe that using the body to its full advantage and making the most of strength is most important part. You will want to correct your weaknesses and balance your body from the inside out.

Breathing is the most important part of Pilates.

It will circulate the blood so that it will get the cells in the body awake. They can then take away the waste that is found to make you tired. For the blood to do what it is intended to do, it needs to be maintained and full of oxygen.

You will need to center your body and have full concentration in Pilates.

You need to use your abdomen, lower back, buttocks and hips for this movement. It is known as the powerhouse. This is where all of your energy is going to come out and flow to your limbs.

Concentration is important too because you need to keep your focus.

Anyone just starting with Pilates need to have complete focus. You need to pay attention to your body and build on the fragile and small movements that control breathing. You will find that control and precision are also important. Each movement that you make is going to serve a purpose in Pilates.
